BC Communities in Bloom is pleased to announce the involvement of 25 communities in this year's evaluation program.

Who should be involved?
It has been the experience of the BC Communities in Bloom program that communities tend to be more successful when participants have a broader and deeper 'grassroots' involvement including:

- a true desire to participate based on a love of gardens and gardening
- a strong desire to better their communities
- a strong environmental consciousness
- a sense of heritage and civic pride
- an understanding that economic benefit is likely to follow
- support of the Mayor and Council

What Category should you be in?
Registrations for BC Communities in Bloom are categorized according to community population in order to ensure fairness with respect to available people and other resources.

There are currently eight population categories:

- 1 - 1000
- 1001 - 3000
- 3001 - 5000
- 5001 - 10,000
- 10,001 - 20,000
- 20,001 - 50,000
- 50,001 - 100,000
- 100,001 - 300,000

Communities with a population base greater than 300,000 are entered directly into the National Communities in Bloom program.

Partcipation Registration Deadlines :

Early Bird Registration ... January 31st, 2010.
Final Entry Registration ...March 31st, 2010.

Community Showcase Registration Deadline: June 30th , 2010.

Provincial :
Open to any municipality wanting to compete against BC communities of similar size. Full competition, visited by two judges, using National Grid to award bloom rating certificate and evaluation report. Top 5-bloom winner in each population category invited to participate in the National CiB program in following year.Trophies also awarded for specific achievements in one of the eight criteria.

Non-Competitive :
An option for first time communities. Evaluation with two visiting judges like full competition and receive a 20-page evaluation report with no bloom rating on the certificate.

NEW !!

Winner's Circle
:
This new category is for communities that have been 5-Bloom winners and want to continue CiB initiatives.

Mentor :
5 bloom winner (provincial or national) can mentor a NEW* BC community. Separate competition category to pair a new community with an experienced mentor community. Both are evaluated with each score combined for a final mark.No population grouping for competition but registration fee is based on population. Separate registration form and fee required for each participant.Bonus marks available for Mentors.

Gateway
:
Recognition for outstanding community entrance signage. BC CiB Judges to nominate any community with outstanding entry signage that they encounter while on tour. Committee will make a final selection and announce it at the BCCiB Awards Ceremony.

Community Showcase : ( Registration Deadline - June 30th, 2010. )
This allows groups with a specific project or geographical segments within a community to participate in BC Communities in Bloom. Groups such as: Garden Clubs, Business Improvement Assoc., Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Clubs and Schools etc. are welcome to submit their projects.

No evaluation forms are provided as this category is not judged. It is to recognize the community with a participation certificate presented at the BCCiB Awards (if in attendance).

How to Participate
Each participating BC community develops its own organizing committee, with responsibilities ranging from:

- the development of sustainable landscape projects
- floral and other beautification projects
- management of long-term heritage and environmental initiatives
- generating awareness, enthusiasm and involving citizens of all ages in their
- community's effort
- arranging for and hosting the judges on evaluation day
- obtain funding for registration, projects, volunteer recognition events, travel to
- mentoring community and awards/conference weekend

Program Participation Checklist
Check to see that you meet the following requirements to participate in the BCCiB program ...

Get approval of mayor, city council, or responsible municipal department and complete registration form, submit with appropriate fee to BC-CIB office by March 31st deadline.

Organize a local CIB program committee comprised of representatives from local businesses, service groups, private citizens and government.

Review judging criteria and documents received from CIB upon registration. Create notebook for year-round events in the community that relate to the evaluation grid criteria. Develop plans for recording ongoing events. Develop plans for those grid areas the community is not addressing. Borrow ideas for local contests from CIB.

Fill out municipal information form and place a copy in the Community Profile Binder.

Spread the word about the competition. Get the community press involved to raise excitement throughout the entire process.

Raise funds to assist community group efforts and to cover costs of participation, judges' visit, and attending provincial and/or national awards ceremony and symposiums.

Contact judges two weeks prior to their arrival to finalize details. Review logistics of judges' visit, events, people to meet, places to experience, etc. Plan accommodations and meals for judges. Communicate with CIB about logistics, timetables, contact information and questions.

Allow at least three hours for judges to fill out evaluation grids in a private, quiet location before they leave your community.

Make plans to attend the Provincial Awards Ceremony and National's Symposium in the fall.
